Esse Ironheart Wood Fired Range Cooker

The British made Esse Ironheart is the quintessential wood burning range cooker. Its combustion system has recently been updated to comply with the ultra low emissions limits of the new Ecodesign regulations and to improve efficiency, which now stands at 80.6% and is A+ rated. Fortunately the Ironheart has maintained all of the Iconic engineered design elements that's made it a favourite kitchen workhorse for the best part of two decades. Robust steel bodywork, four high quality cast iron doors, heavy duty stainless steel insulating hotplate lids and polished chrome fittings mean that this isn't some lightweight either – it weighs in at a staggering 280kg and has the build quality, premium materials and attention to detail that ensure it will deliver cost effective, energy independent, low carbon heating and cooking long into the future.

In practical terms the Ironheart has a highly controllable 7.6kW heat output precisely managed with a single slider on the top left of the firebox. Unusually for a modern stove there's also a useful flue damper which can also help manage an occasional excessive flue draft, for example, during adverse weather conditions. If needed it can also be used to provide additional 'booster' combustion air for a quicker lighting fire. The temperature of the large 47 litre capacity oven (H340 W320 D440) is controlled with a separate oven damper which routes the hot gases from the firebox away from the oven to allow you to set the desired temperature for the widest range of food.

The Ironheart has a large almost full width dog bone shaped hotplate with two large diameter domed lids and stay-cool handles for shallow cooking directly on the hotplate. It's unlikely that you'll ever run out of space since the Ironheart's warm top surface area can take up to six saucepans for more complex food prepping as well as for simmering, bread proving and plate warming. If that's not enough there's also a great looking optional hostess side shelf for even more space. The large oven can easily handle the biggest dishes including a full-sized turkey and when all you have left is burning embers you can even use the firebox itself for grilling and barbecuing to perfection.

The Ironheart's classic industrial chic styling means that it will look wonderful in both traditional or contemporary kitchens especially with its big view of the fire so it's really no wonder that this sophisticated range cooker and stove, which brings together these two functions perfectly, has remained one of Esse's all-time best sellers. Now with its low emissions credentials you can be sure that it's likely to stay that way for a long time to come.
