Ecodesign is an EU regulation aimed at controlling emissions from a range of appliances that use energy, including stoves, and it will come into force on 1 January 2022. The United Kingdom will continue with this regulation after Brexit and of course it will apply in the Republic of Ireland.
Stove manufacturers, importers and distributors who are members of the Stove Industry Alliance (SIA) and whose products have verified Ecodesign test results are eligible to use the SIA Ecodesign Ready label on appropriate products. The SIA Ecodesign Ready scheme is an SIA initiative recognised by the Government's Clean Air Strategy and highlights members' commitment to developing combustion efficiency and limit the emissions stoves produce. For stove buyers an SIA Ecodesign Ready stove will ensure that their stove is 'future proof', comes from a reputable manufacturer and is proven to be as environmentally friendly as it's possible to be.
In the case of wood burning and multi fuel stoves, Ecodesign provides much tighter limitations on a range of different emission types than the current EN13240 and EN13229 test regime (also set to change with the replacement EN16510 standard) and for the first time stoves will be tested for NOx (nitrogen oxide), OGC (organic gaseous compound) and PM (particulate matter eg soot). Ecodesign will also reduce carbon monoxide (CO) emissions by some 88% and at the same time will raise the minimum energy efficiency of stoves from 60% to 75%, a 25% increase.
The SIA Ecodesign Ready scheme will finish at the end of 2021 when all new stoves by law must be Ecodesign compliant. The scheme will eventually be replaced by the independent ClearSkies mark. ClearSkies will grade the emissions and energy performance of stoves that go beyond the Ecodesign minimum requirements. Under Ecodesign the energy efficiency of most stoves is rated as A or A+ without any acknowledgment of how good they are at reducing emissions. The ClearSkies mark
will allow buyers to easily identify the cleanest burning stoves that also have the lowest emissions. You can check out The Stove Yard's ClearSkies stoves here.
