They're boiler stoves Jim, but not as we know them.

At The Stove Yard in the early days we built our business in Ireland on the back of sky rocketing oil prices and multi fuel central heating boiler stoves. With energy prices eventually settling down and with virtually everyone and his uncle having installed one, boiler stove sales eventually settled down. With the introduction of the tough Ecodesign emissions regulations at the end of this year it seemed to everyone that boiler stoves would come to the end of the road.

The emissions levels of traditional boiler stoves are always going to be too high for Ecodesign because of the way they work. As the water in the wrap-around or saddle type tanks take their heat from the firebox they cool the flue gases down to the point that more of the remnants of the combustion process are left in the gases than would be the case with a non-boiler stove. This has meant that manufacturers have ceased making any new ones. Even the best examples, like the Defra approved Dunsley Yorkshire and best sellers like Hi-Flame's Aidan could not be developed to pass the Ecodesign requirements.

However, the stove makers at Woodfire have risen to the challenge and have created six new Ecodesign wood burning boiler stoves. To date they're the only people that we know of who have managed this. They've done away with the traditional boiler design (the tank now sits above the fire chamber) and they have also incorporated the very latest combustion technology. Now high efficiency and low emissions wood fired central heating, using logs, can re-stake its claim as an important component in the modern heating mix, including in low energy and passiv haus type homes. At the moment this is all thanks to Woodfire.

If you’re planning to install a stove in your shed, hut, cabin or garden office then no doubt you’ve probably already visited some websites and also watched a few of the many YouTube videos to help kick-start your project. It’s important though to point out that a lot of these ‘how to’ videos, however well-intentioned they may be, in our opinion are grossly misinformed and some of the practices shown are actually downright dangerous... read more

DON'T BURN IT JUST BECAUSE IT'S FREE...

With the current crippling energy prices many of us are going to have to rely more and more on our stoves and, if we haven't got a stove, our open fires. There's going to be a real temptation therefore to burn whatever we can lay our hands on rather than pay out for kiln dried or seasoned wood and smokeless coal. After all it's free fuel, isn't it? ...more
