SALAMANDER LITTLE RANGE

SALAMANDER LITTLE RANGE MULTI FUEL COOK STOVE

From those wonderful folks in deepest Devon who brought you the tiny cast iron Hobbit stoves comes the fully formed and very capable Little Range wood burning and multi fuel cook stove that will do just about everything an off-gridder could possible want, but in less than half the space. It’s so good and so well made that, in fact, it will be equally at home in an urban domestic kitchen (it’s Defra approved for burning wood) or remote shepherd hut. The Salamander Little Range is a clever bit of kit that packs a much bigger punch, both in terms of heat output and flexible cooking capacity than its tiny size suggests. It’s been designed by Salamander from scratch, not only to capitalise on all of the Hobbit’s successful tried and tested and much-loved features but also to exceed the exacting 2022 Ecodesign emissions standards – no easy task for a small firebox. As you’d expect from Salamander it accomplishes all of this with aplomb.

The Little Range delivers all of the abundant heat of the Hobbit with its 4.3kW nominal output and 86.7% A+ efficiency – 83.4% if you need to burn smokeless coal (optional coal bars recommended). On top of this you get a decent sized stainless steel hotplate (667 x 216 mm / 26.7” x 8.6” approx) inset within a chunky wipe-clean enamelled bumper that will hold a kettle and a couple of medium-sized cook pots (or one large rectangular casserole dish) at the same time. The hotplate provides a versatile range of temperatures across its whole surface, for example allowing you to simmer at one end and fry at the other. The hotplate can also be easily removed to allow for deep cleaning when necessary. To widen your cooking options there’s also an oven / plate warmer that will hold a couple of baking trays or one oven-proof pot. The oven has a useful stainless steel trimmed temperature gauge on the cast iron oven door with the temperature controlled via a robust stainless steel intuitive lever dial at the back of the hotplate.

TRADITIONALLY STYLED WITH LATEST COMBUSTION SYSTEM

The Salamander Little Range cook stove is traditionally styled and has bags of natural charm and character. It features high quality moulded cast iron doors and a deep enamelled bumper hot plate edging which nicely contrasts with the polished chrome lever clamp handles and fittings. There’s a traditional separate ash pan compartment with ash pan and an open multi fuel cast grate with dust free external riddler. All of this conceals the latest clean burning combustion system incorporating pre-heated tertiary air to further reduce emissions and increase fuel economy. Unusually there are also three separate controls for Primary (multi fuel and booster), Secondary (airwash and wood burning) and Tertiary (emissions and efficiency) combustion air supply so that you get a highly controllable economic heat, both for the room and for cooking. As you’d expect from any modern stove there’s also direct external air capability with an optional kit.

More Little Range options include a choice of wipe clean black enamelled Splash Backs. The three-quarter Splash Back brings the overall height of the appliance to 1000mm (40” approx) and the full-sized Splash Back, which also has a handy stainless steel tool bar at the top, increases the overall height to 1150mm (46” approx). Since the Little Range is aimed primarily at the off-grid market where most of the building’s are likely to be single storey and made predominately from combustible materials, Salamander have developed an optional side heat shield (sold singly as left or right or in a pair) and a rear heat shield which can be combined with the Splash Backs. These can reduce the safe distances by a further 200mm (8”) at the side and 300mm (12”) at the rear.

PERFECTLY DESIGNED FOR OFF-GRID INSTALLATIONS

The Little Range’s 100mm (4”) flue pipe size (top outlet only) also ensures that it will create sufficient updraught needed for safe operation in single storey constructions without having to create a large length of unsightly external chimney. You must ensure however that the appropriate spillage tests are carried out and that any overhanging trees and neighbouring buildings will not affect the draught. For the complete off-grid package you can also specify the optional stainless steel 1kW side boiler. This fits inside the right hand side of the Little Range’s firebox to provide a useful supply of indirect hot water for the essentials such as dish washing, when for safety reasons, it is connected to the appropriate hot water tank (not supplied). For small sheds and shepherd huts etc this also has the advantage of reducing excessive heat to the room.

Living off-grid means being prepared and the Little Range does just that. Now you can get away from it all in your perfect bolt-hole safe in the knowledge that the Salamander Little Range will supply both the heat and sustenance for you to make the most of it – but don’t forget to bring the bacon and eggs, along with all of the bread-making ingredients.
