There is still a place for boiler stoves, especially in a new build where an integrated heating system can be planned from the very beginning to deliver central heating and hot water. Although modern, low emissions Ecodesign wood burning boiler stoves provide less heat output than the previous generation of multi fuel boiler stoves, both to the room and to the hot water, this is no bad thing. Today's low energy homes require significantly less heat than that which would be provided by the old style high output boiler stoves which would simply make them impossible to live with. New wood burning boilers however have been designed specifically with this type of home in mind and include features such as direct external air supply (DEAS) to ensure the house remains air-tight.
If you have access to a suitable free or cheap wood supply then designing an off grid Ecodesign wood burning boiler stove into your heating mix makes even more low carbon sense – plus you get the added advantage of giving your new build a homely focal point that's very hard to beat. There are a number of tried and tested methods of installing a boiler stove which incorporate multi-coil or heat accumulator hot water tanks and which can be integrated with gas central heating, solar power or heat pumps. Such systems should only ever be designed and undertaken by a specialist with the experience and expertise to design and deliver an efficient, well balanced system that precisely meets your needs.
