XL Big Green Egg


The XL Big Green Egg barbecue is the biggest in the current range and is a 'must have' if you regularly cater for a very large family group or for big get-togethers. The Extra Large's 24" diameter cooking surface will perfectly cook twice as many burgers as the Large Big Green Egg. That's 24 in total, but of course being an Egg it has been designed to do so much more than basic charcoal grilling and in the process make it all very easy for you too. It's why it's widely regarded as the ultimate barbecue. Flame grill, bake, steam, smoke, roast, cook low and slow and in a paella pan or on a plancha griddle and follow confidently in the footsteps of some of the world's best chefs.

Having twice the capacity of the Large Egg you'd be forgiven for thinking that the XL will use twice the charcoal – but you'd be wrong. The superior construction and insulation of all Big Green Eggs means that very little heat is wasted and therefore very little fuel is used, so in reality there is really very little difference in the fuel economy between the two. Both models are highly efficient. If you have a lot of hungry mouths to feed and you definitely need the extra capacity then the XL Big Green Egg is the one for you.



With the Extra Large Big Green Egg not only can you barbecue directly over the charcoal but now that the very clever ConvEGGtor accessory is included as standard you'll be able to quickly turn your Egg into a highly efficient outdoor convection oven. You can cook a much bigger range of dishes with indirect heat while still infusing them with the wonderful wood fired flavours we all love. Nothing can replicate that gentle charcoal flavour the Egg is renowned for. Crispy pizza bases, tasty rustic breads, delicious hot smoked salmon, succulent pulled pork and probably the best roast chicken you've ever tasted, can all become a reality with the XL.

The secret to this success is in the XL Egg's air-tight high temperature rim gasket that seals in both the moisture and the flavour as well as the Egg's consistent heat and precision temperature control that makes for reliable high quality cooking. For the Extra Large model Big Green Egg offer an amazing range of well-thought out and well-made optional accessories, including a thick pizza baking stone for 21" pizzas, that will make producing the widest variety of delicious, flavoursome, restaurant quality food a stroll in the park. It will take about fifteen to twenty minutes to get your Extra Large Big Green Egg up to a good working temperature which will give you time to prep the food that it's going to easily swallow up. After that the world's your lobster or virtually anything else that you fancy. You're only really limited by your imagination. Once the food is placed inside the Egg and the lid is lowered then the oven heat can be monitored with its large integrated temperature gauge and adjusted accordingly by using a combination of the patented cast iron regulator on the top and the sliding door on the ash compartment at the base. The more air you let into the Egg through these two vents then the higher the internal temperature will be. This precise heat control means that with the Egg there's no need for huge amounts of charcoal. When cooking is completed the combustion air can be fully closed off to safely extinguish the fire so that any remaining charcoal can be reused next time.

There's a lot of talk about the Big Green Egg's hand crafted Nasa-grade hand made thick wall ceramics with their iconic dimples, but the simple fact is that the superior insulation that this provides is so much better than that provided by any other ceramic outdoor ovens and this will consequently deliver you improved heat retention and much better fuel economy – both essential for an oven as big as the XL. With the Extra Large XL you also get Big Green Egg's renowned precision control and temperature accuracy. The patented system, with its cast iron regulator cap and stainless steel ash compartment air control will supply consistent heat whatever temperature you decide to set all the way up to 400ºC. It also has the ability maintain the very low temperatures needed for successful low and slow cooking and smoking making these last for periods up to 18 hours. Since the Extra Large Egg's lid is extremely heavy there are two very reliable heavy duty spring loaded hinges for balanced easy and gentle opening and closing. There's also a high temperature refractory dome gasket to ensure a longer lasting air-tight seal to further aid fuel efficiency and temperature control.



Assembly of the Extra Large XL Big Green Egg will take around 90 minutes for two strong people – it weighs over 15 stone and great care will need to be taken to safely locate it. Once you've cooked on your Extra Large XL Egg it's very easy to keep it clean once it has cooled down. Rake out any ash (unless your using again it within a few days). You can save any large pieces of charcoal for re-use. Simply wipe down the internal ceramics with a cloth and then thoroughly clean food debris and fat from any grates or metal accessories with a grill brush as you would with any other barbecue.

Maintaining your Extra Large XL Egg is easy too. After using it for about a month you'll have to carefully re-tighten up any bolts and apply some machine oil to the hinges and also apply a wipe of cooking oil (not olive oil) to the cast iron regulator cap on the lid. When not in use, leave both air vents open and keep the Egg covered and protected from the elements. If you use your XL Big Green Egg a lot then after a few years you're eventually bound to experience some minor wear and tear so it's good to know that Big Green Egg carry spares for everything you're ever likely to need and that the care and support they provide their customers is first class.
