Chimney Fire Safety Week began yesterday and Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service is reminding people of the dangers of chimney fires and to ensure that chimneys, including stove flue systems, are swept and cleaned regularly. It attended over 1700 chimney fires last year, which represented just over 7% of all the incidents they attended in 2013. They are urging anyone who plans to light their fire or stove over the coming colder months to be 'fire safe' and have their flue system swept first. All chimney fires have the potential to be extremely dangerous and sweeping also means that objects such as nests, cobwebs and loose brickwork are cleared, which also helps minimise the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Please also ensure that you have working smoke detectors and CO alarms in your home and test them once a week.
