The EU's new Energy Union Package has just been announced and it provides proposals for energy and emissions commitments ahead of the next big global 'talking shop' in Paris later this year. It foresees the end of the European fossil fuel-dominated economy with greater steps taken towards a more sustainable, energy independent, decarbonised energy mix to make the EU world leaders in renewables. Although some climate change campaigners say it doesn't go far enough, it includes an ambitious and binding emissions reduction target of at least 40% below 1990 levels by 2030. The ultimate political aim is to end up with a cheaper smarter energy system that's also less dependent on Russia.
