28.04.16 Lords blocks decision to scrap zero-carbon homes

Everyone thought it was nuts except the Government, but last summer contrary to its Paris commitments, they went ahead anyway and scrapped their zero-carbon homes requirement – a move which many believed would cause higher energy bills for new homeowners in future decades. But thank goodness for our unelected second chamber who've done the right thing and voted to reintroduce on-site carbon compliance standards for homes and, while they were at it, to also significantly extend the grace period criteria for onshore wind farm subsidies. There was cross-party support for an amendment to the new Housing and Planning Bill which would ensure that all new homes in England in future will meet stringent energy efficiency and carbon compliance standards.
