If you were unfortunate to suffer the effects of last year's big floods, widely accepted as part of global warming, then you might like to read the House of Commons' white paper on this. It says that the funding for flood defence maintenance was at its bare minimum and was the first thing to be cut from budgets. The committee is now urging Defra to ensure that there will be no further cuts to frontline flood and coastal risk management budgets and for fully-funded plans to urgently address the backlog of dredging and maintenance work as well as deliver investment in new defences. The report concludes that ministers must act now to if a repeat is to be avoided.
