...along with the bad news, is that following rapid warming in the late 20th century, the 21st century has seen little increase in the average temperature at the Earth's surface. So far, so good. This has been a bit of a puzzle for the climate science community with more than a dozen theories proposed. However, the latest research shows that the heat which is absent from the Earth's surface is actually plunging deep into the north and south Atlantic Ocean and is part of a naturally occurring cycle. This partly explains why average global air temperatures have flatlined since 1999, despite greenhouse gases trapping more solar heat at the Earth's surface. Now here's the bad news: This is part of recurrent 30 year cycles that are driven by the amount of salt in the sea which stores the heat deep in the Atlantic and Southern oceans. Researchers now believe that after the 30 warmer years we've just experienced these will be followed by 30 cooler years. Unfortunately with what's happening with other aspects of global warming it still means the Earth's temperature trend is heading upwards with a graph of the rises being described as looking a bit like a staircase.
