The Labour Party tabled 11 amendments to tighten the regulations for shale gas extraction and protect water supplies in the Bill's second reading yesterday. These include mandatory independent well inspections and ensuring that all water companies become statutory consultees in the planning process. Labour claim that the government has repeatedly ignored genuine environmental concerns and seems to be prepared to accept shale gas development at any cost. The Department of Energy and Climate Change (Decc) said that shale exploitation must be safe and environmentally sound and that robust regulations are already in place to prevent water contamination and mitigate seismic activity and air pollution.
