28.07.15 Europe's biggest battery is Irish

Building work has started at the UK's biggest energy storage facility in Kilroot in Northern Ireland. It should be up and running by the end of 2015 and will store electricity generated by wind farms which can then be used at times of peak demand. It will eventually form part of Europe's largest grid-connected storage plant and will help Northern Ireland reach its 2020 target of 40% of its electricity generated from renewable sources. However, whether this target is still achievable, given all of the Government's recent renewables policy changes, could be questionable.
