The National Grid is seeking to secure the UK’s electricity supply ahead of next winter. Three reserve gas-powered plants have been contracted to remain on standby between November 2015 and February 2016 when the UK is set to have the highest risk of blackouts for almost 10 years. A number of plants have not been operational this year and this has significantly reduced this year's supply safety margins. In addition two of this years reserve plants have faltered when taking mandatory tests which has further raised concerns about the UK's preparedness. One has to wonder how the country would have coped if 2014 hadn't been the mildest year since records began.
