EDF shuts 4 reactors last week EDF Energy said that four of its nuclear reactors would require inspection because of a defect discovered on a reactor at the Heysham nuclear plant. EDF will shut down the four similarly designed reactors at Heysham and Hartlepool so that they can be comprehensively inspected. This will reduce the power produced by the UK’s nuclear power plants by some 25% during the estimated 8-week shutdown. The short-fall will be made up by the old carbon-producing coal-powered stations which increasingly rely on imported Russian coal.
