The Hunterston B nuclear power plant in Ayrshire, Scotland, which was due to cease operation in 2011, has now had its working life extended a further 7 years until 2023. A £20 million overhaul of the power station has already been started by EDF. Anti-nuclear campaigners say the money could be better spent and create more jobs if it was used to insulate people's homes or to develop renewable alternatives. The government in Scotland is opposed to the construction of any new nuclear power stations in Scotland.
